
From Intimidating to Inviting: Redesigning MidDec’s Radon Detector
MidDec, a technology company based in Sundsvall, Sweden, develops compact, real-time radon detectors used in various applications including surveillance, alarm systems, and environmental monitoring. The existing radon detector, while highly functional, features a design perceived as intimidating and unsuitable for home or office environments.
Goal
The objective of this project was to redesign the detector’s exterior to create a more approachable, user-friendly appearance. The new design needed to seamlessly blend into residential and professional spaces without drawing unwanted attention, while maintaining the device’s technological integrity and usability.

Problem

Used soft, neutral colors and smooth forms to help the device blend seamlessly into home and office interiors.
Eliminated harsh lines and intimidating features to create a friendly, non-threatening appearance.
Ensured the new design maintained full functionality and ease of use without compromising technological performance.
Collaborated with engineers to balance design improvements with technical requirements.
