SUNDSVALL MUNICIPALITY

A Space to Read, Relax, and Respect

At Sundsvalls Stadsbibliotek, increased socializing among young visitors disrupted the peaceful reading and studying atmosphere - the library risked losing its core function as a calm, focused environment.

The challenge was to redesign the interior so it could simultaneously support quiet reading/study and social interaction, without letting one compromise the other.

The goal was to create a clear separation: a cozy, calm reading/study area for those who seek focus, and a dedicated social zone for teens and groups - ensuring both groups could coexist peacefully.

As industrial designer, I analysed user behavior through on-site observation, reworked the spatial layout, defined new zoning (relocating social zones nearer to staff), redesigned décor and ambience (new study-friendly rooms, hang-out areas, vibrant social spaces), and delivered a layout that restored calm for readers while giving young visitors their own place to socialize.

The yellow circle was moved from the red marker to another location. Instead, the room marked in red was developed into a study and focus room.

The green circle was moved from the red marker to another location and became a hang-out area where teens could be with their friends.

The blue circle was decorated by a famous graffiti artist from Sundsvall.
